EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Executive Director, Commonweal
Reports to: President
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Location: Bolinas, California
Commonweal seeks an experienced and creative leader to fill the position of Executive Director (ED). Commonweal, founded in 1976, is a nonprofit institute with programs in health, the environment and education. Commonweal is located in beautiful coastal Bolinas, California, an hour north of San Francisco. Commonweal has a very capable staff of 30 and highly regarded programs for cancer patients, health care professionals, environmental health, ocean policy reform, juvenile justice reform, permaculture gardening, adult education and more. Situated on a 100 acre site that includes a twenty-bed retreat facility, a permaculture garden and a dozen buildings, Commonweal has a national reputation for excellence in its work.
Commonweal is a quite unique organization with respect to the diversity of programs. Commonweal functions as a platform for outstanding work by a dozen program leaders and their support staff. We seek an ED who understands the concept of "servant leadership." To lead Commonweal is to serve and support the creative power of the Commonweal program directors and staff and the remarkable extended Commonweal community.
The Executive Director reports to and works in partnership with Commonweal's Founder and President. The precise division of responsibilities between the ED and the President will depend in part on the ED's skills and interests. Principle responsibilities for management and fundraising are at the heart of the ED's responsibilities.
The Executive Director plays four key roles in the Commonweal community. First, the ED leads and supports the staff. Second, the ED represents Commonweal with its important constituencies and the public. Third, the ED manages this small but necessarily complex nonprofit organization. Finally, the ED plays a major role in sustaining and developing the sources of support Commonweal requires from foundations, individual donors, and program revenues.
